About “Mưỡu” Exhibition

The echoes of Ca trù have led me to a place—perhaps one I chose as an anchor—that, in some way, has freed the artistic language I rely on.

From the lingering mist rising, from the melodies of ả đào singers—”The green mountains, the blue waters…”—sung by generations of performers, from Quách Thị Hồ to Kim Đức, from artist-scholar Bạch Vân… One can only listen, absorb, and feel, yet words fail to capture it. They sing with a haunting, restless passion, like silkworms tirelessly spinning their silk.

The soaring compositions, the fates of ca nương singing for others, radiant in their beauty yet destined to fade—above all, these elements form an unparalleled musical tradition, both grand and sorrowful.

Be it the blades of grass, the branches of trees, or the fate of any individual, Ca trù channels their deepest emotions. That is why I wish to sing Ca trù through my own language—painting and contemporary installation art.

The Dứa and paper paintings are crafted from materials I personally sourced and worked on with artisans, ensuring the texture of each sheet aligns with the vision of my artwork.

The installation incorporates paper and silk in soft shades of brown and pink, with perforations that create interwoven spaces, extending and flowing. It connects with a cluster of stainless steel installations, entwined with Dứa fibers, resembling a silkworm cocoon—preserving and protecting the beauty of a transforming artistic narrative.

The abstract sounds in this work are minimalist expressions of my artistic spirit—leading me into a world of subtlety, contemplation, and longing. It is through this that I hope to capture the essence of Ca trù within my own soul.

Together with artist Tây Phong, who shares my deep love for Ca trù, we find meaning in hát nói (a poetic singing form). We immerse ourselves in the words of literary masters, seeking to share them with the audience through three interconnected art forms: Painting, Installation Art, and Performance Art.

Reflection of the SoulNguyễn Du

(Translated by Bùi Kỷ, Phan Võ, Nguyễn Khắc Hanh)

Oh, soul, why do you not return?
No place on earth for you to lean.
From heaven to earth, all paths are gone,
Yet Yen and Dinh cities, do not think to tread.
The cities and walls are thus, the people quite unlike,
Dust flies, staining people’s clothes.
Proud chariots and grand palaces,
They stand and sit, discussing, shoulder to shoulder with Cao and Quy.
